CommentsI am a 15 year old boy, and I have Pectus Excavatum. It was a condition that I was born with. I have recently consulted a doctor and look forward to undergoing to Nuss Procedure this Summer. Some side comments that I will add are that I have chosen to keep my condition secret, and not tell anyone. This is becoming increasingly harder the older I get. Due to my condition, I have extremly low self esteem, no self confidence and I am absolutly ashamed of the way my chest is shaped. All my life I have had to come up with excuses and exclude myself from activiteis, and it hurts to do this.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes. I am extremly ashamed of the shape of my chest. I dont understand why I just couldent be born normal. Due to my condition I have extremly low self esteem and no self confidence.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?Currently it's undetermined if my trouble breathing is from my Asthma or from the stress this disorder puts on my heart and lungs. Really I dont even know if I have asthma or if the breathing troubles I have are just from this disorder.
What do you think of this website?I appreciate the website very much. The people who took the time and effort to put this information out there I once again thank you for doing this it has been helpful. I live an hour and a half drive from the Hospital where I will be having my surgery done at so I cant always ask the questions I need to ask. That is why I came looking on the internet and found it. Up until I visited my doctor's office I did not even know the name of my disorder.

CommentsI had a pectus excavatum procedure done on me down here in mob city and I am a lot better. I just found this site because I am doing a research paper on it now. Dr. William Higgs did my procedure and even though I have a scar down the front of my chest spanning 11 inches it is barely even noticeable.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? It used to. Sometimes people are like man thats cool and then sometimes they are like eww gross. But I'm 20 years old now and it doesn't effect me anymore I don't even think about it.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? Before I had surgery it did. I decided to have it done because I was having a really hard time keeping up with my teamates in conditioning in Basketball and my playing wasn't as effective. This is the ultimate reason I had the procedure done.
What do you think of this website?I liked it. It was very informative.

CommentsI am 45 years old and have only just realised I have pe by reading this website. I am amazed! I inherited the condition from my father and no-one has ever told me what it is. I would be interested in finding out if my case is mild or moderate as I have had nothing to compare to. Having looked at the photos on the website I am sure it is not severe.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes, although I am much more confident now than I have been. I find it difficult choosing clothes, especially swimsuits and try to disguise the condition as much as possible. Like many people I was teased at school before I realised anything was different myself and developed an inferiority complex about my body at a young age.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I haven't noticed anything until recently. I have increased my physical activity in recent months and have started to notice a 'mild tight heart pain' on occasions.
What do you think of this website?A complete revelation and extremely informative. It has been comforting to read so many stories similar to my own.

Commentsthanks everyone for your comments and making me feel not alone anymore.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?im 17 and find it difficult to go swimming or bare my chest in front of anyone, even family. im alot more concious of myself than i used to be and tend to be quite shy and quiet.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?not really. ive always been very active and quite fit. ive ran in cross country for my school so i wouldnt say it affects my stamina. i would say i was 4 on a scale of 1 to 10.
What do you think of this website?great, particulary hearing other peoples experiences. its given me more confidence to accept the condition

Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?I think it has affected me psychologically in the past but at 57 I am used to it. Traits such as low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, school phobia and remaining in the parental home until my mid-30s, which I certainly have or had, seem to be statistically linked to pectus deformity.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I suppose it must have done. I have always walked, with or without a dog, for a couple of miles a day, on average, strenuously, as a substitute for more 'violent' forms of exercise, which I could not sustain. I leant to swim 3 years ago and now swim 5 times a week. When I was at school, I did not take part in any organised PE or sports.
What do you think of this website?I think that it is very informative and it makes me feel les of a freak than some GPs have tended to do in the past, expressing surprise at the chest that confronts their stethoscopes. And I seem to share most of the personality characteristics associated with pectus deformities. So there is a reassuring feling that I am not alone. One point: two GPs have told me recently that my pectus excavatum is the effect of undiagnosed asthma as a child (I was diagnosed asthmatic about 10 years ago). But it seems to congenital. Is this a matter of dispute and ongoing research?
