CommentsHi, my name is Aviram Alter, i'm 14 years old, and I just found out I have PE. I've had it for quite a couple of years now, but for the bigger part of these years I never knew I was in any way different from other kids. Lately, though, it has been really troubling me. I decided to search for information, and found this site. I do know I did not have PE when I was a baby/little kid, as I have pictures, but I still find it strange that my parents never worried about it, or talked to me about it. I really want this corrected, through surgery even if I must, but I have no idea how to approach my parents about this. I had thought about faking a disease, going to the doctor, and at the same time ask him to examine my chest...But i'd rather just talk to my parents about it. If anyone has any advice on how to approach them, please Email me. Thanks!
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes, it's quite disturbing, especially now that I know that it won't go away or anything.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I don't know. I do have minor asthma. And my heart is more on the left side of the chest than the right...
What do you think of this website?Amazing, helpful. This is one site that I will never forget.

CommentsWow. Never met anyone other then my Dad who had the condition so this site is an eye opener. Had the silicone surgery did not work had it removed. Pe is hard to live with especially when you are young. But to all those young ones and those in their teens , get on with it don't let it consume you. If you let it knock your confidence then it has turned into a disabilty. I'm not saying take your top of and parade up and down the high street. Just try and get on with it, it's what I have done.It takes time, but in retrospect I spent too much time in my youth worrying about it. I have a beautiful wife and am very happy. I have also notice I can balance a a beer can in my chest when I lie down which is quite useful. (May be we are evolving quicker then the rest!!!!!!) Good luck drop me a line if u like.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? It used to, not anymore. Got one life haven't got time to waste it worrying about PE.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? Not that I have noticed although laying on my left side at night can leave me a bit soar the following day.
What do you think of this website?Great wish it was around when I was younger.

CommentsYour web site is very helpful. My son is scheduled for the Nuss procedure this June. He is 15 and really wants the procedure as his pectus became very noticeable after his last growth spurt. Thank you.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?I'll ask him - but when you live in a hot climate you swim a lot with your friends - making it hard to hide a pectus in social situations.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? He's always had asthma and breathing related issues and wasn't really interested in sports because of the breathing/asthma issues. For years I've been trying to get him to 'sit up straight' without realizing there could be a physiological reason for his poor posture.
What do you think of this website?Very helpful. Thank you.

CommentsI am 16 and when I was 14 I had the Nuss Procedure done to correct my PE. I was diagnosed with a sunken sternum when I was 3 but there wasn't really any information about procedures and nothing was known about PE. I am getting ready to have my Nuss bar removed in June 2004 and things are working out really well.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?I was greatly affected by my PE. As a teenage girl in California and living on the beach, I was always nervous about wearing bathing suits or telling people about my PE because I was afraid that people would treat me differenly. I highly suggest to any parent whose children have PE or you have PE yourself to think about having any corrective procedure.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I had a few problems physically. I had asthma that was from my PE, my lungs were smashed to one side and didn't receive as much oxygen as they should have and my heart was shaped like a figure 8 and only have of my heart had been working. Without the Nuss procedure, I would have had major heart problems as I got older.
