| Comments | I am the mum of a lovely 7 year old son who has a caved in central portion of his chest. I do not see it as a deformity and just the way he is! To lable it a disablily is terrible and brings tears to the eyes just to think that others may see it as such. He is tall and thin and his chest is just that way too - no lable attached!!!! The thought of major surgery appalls me and I would never consider it for him, as he is perfect just the way he is. He is a happy, healthy, active child, who is aware but not at all bothered that his chest dips in the middle, even though he knows that other boys in his class aren't quite the same shape. Long may this continue. How sad that other people could not see him the same way. |

| Comments | hello-
I am a mother and a wife of pe patients.
my son had the nuss procdr. done 2 years ago and is doing great.it was very painful at first but after the first month he has been back to normal. he is due to get the bar out next month and he looks wonderful! he no longer complains of chest pain like before the operation. My husband never got his fixed yet, but would love to when we can afford 2 months without his salery. We had such a good experience with the surgery. I got all my info from websites before aproching the Drs. you really have to push them to get anywhere they think of it as only cosmetic and that is not true!!! feel free to contact us about what to expect. GOOD LUCK !

| Comments | How many people type in Chest Deformaties into GOOGLE!!!!.Thank god i have found people with my condition.I have felt alone all these years.I am 35 years old and start to notice my PE when i was about 10 years old.Early photos i have seen show no signs of my current condition.I can safely say my teenage years were not enjojable. This was not entirely down to PE but i can safely say it didn't help.I tried to do the normal things i.e going on holiday with my mates. But when you are 18 and sunbathing on a beach with a chest deformaty and your mates taking the mick out of it really doesn't get much worse than that. When all you want to be is normal.I mean i have had girl friends who havn't been bothered about it.And the vast majority of friends havn't said a word. But i always feel as though people are starring at me when in a swimming pool or at a beach. It really does drive me mad and not enjoy it.Over the years i have learned more and more to live with the condition.I am happily married with 2 children. And do really want to enjoy my life because time is short. But when you are bombarded daily with images of perfect bodies on TV and advetising i do get quite low.I have always wondered if there was a way to treat the delve. But always thought the NHS wouldn't fund the operation because it isn't life threatening. Now i have started looking on the internet i see there are various health risks associated with PE.So i may look into this a bit further. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? | Yes it has i was quiet as a child and fairly withdrawn.I have always had a low opinion of myself. This has continued into my adult life. The negative thoughts i have can be quite disturbing sometimes. It all to much for me recently so i went to so a Psychologist. After one session of Hypnosis the results were amazing.I feel alot more confident and happy in myself.Yes i still do think of the PE but i can deal with alot better. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? | Not really.I became a balck belt a Teakwondo.Have complete a couple of half marathons.I play squash and go to the gym.
I try not to do much weight training on my chest because it looks like i have breasts!!!!!
It also hurts around the delve when i do weights so a stear clear of it. |
| What do you think of this website? | I think the web site is great. It sounds awfull but it is nice to hear about other people with PE so i feel as i am not the only person in the world with PE. |

| Comments | Well, after all these years of living with a PE, I have at last found others with the same problem. My story is similar to others - i realised from an early age that my chest was different - I had a dip whereas others had that 'square' chest look that I so longed to have. When I entered my teens (I am 44 now), I became very self conscious and avoided taking my shirt off in public and always got comments when I did (has someone punched you in the chest?). I learned to live with it as I suppose I got used to it (my deformity is a symmetrical dent going in about 3 cm). I was always more embarassed in front of male friends for some reason - I did have a few girlfriends and have been married for 14 yrs; my 2 daughters don't seem to have it - thank God. Since reading about it on the net I have thought of surgery to remove 'it' - I am tempted but my wife is adamant that I stay 'as I am'. I probably won't change it now but if I had a one (selfish) wish...... |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? | Absolutely - spending one's teenage years with a deformity is not something I would wish on my worst enemy. It is easier now but I would rather be without to be honest. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? | No - I have no problems at all - I scuba dived for years and was told that my lung capacity was above average. I did have xrays and an MRI a few years ago for a slipped disc (which was agony), and there were no issues re the heart and lungs. |
| What do you think of this website? | Great - I wish anyone reading this all the best for the future and that you find peace of my mind with this condition. |

| Comments | I've had pectus carinatum since I've been 11 years old. I've always been very self conscious and felt at unease because of my deformity. I started working out alot, put on some weight but I didn't look any good because of my protrusion. About 2,5 years ago I started looking up my condition in the Internet, this was one of the first websites I came across.Got an appointment with a surgeon a a few months later, said he could do the surgery. Two years later I was still waiting, so I started to look for other options abroad. That's when I came in contact with Prof.Schaarschmidt in Berlin, Germany. He had developed this new minimal invasive repair for P.C. and had tons of experience. Went down to have the surgery, now just 2 weeks post op I'm left with a minimal scar and I'm back to normal, even running. Results were amazing, I now have a perfect flat chest. I could not be happier. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? | Yes indeed, always been self consious. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? | Had some pretty bad pain when running fast etc. |
| What do you think of this website? | Good, altough it could be updated with Prof.Schaarschmidts minimal invasive pectus carinatum repair. |
