Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? It used to...like, when i was a kid in summer, i would get teased alot. but i have learned to love the hole in my chest. i call it 'The Super Bowl', & use it as a cup holder. once in a while, i will eat cereal or ice cream out if it to win a bet.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?yes, actually. i cant run for a long period of time, & if i get hit there, i am pretty much down for the count

CommentsMY 15YR OLD SON HAD THIS SURGERY IN AUGUST BY AN EXCELLENT SURGEON FROM ROCKFORD SURGICAL. HE FEELS IT WAS WELL WORTH IT. HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL 4 DAYS AND READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN 2 WEEKS. TIP-WHEN TRYING TO GET APPROVAL THROUGH THE INSURANCE COMPANY, MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE A COUPLE PICTURES WITH DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE CHEST.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?HE USED TO TELL PEOPLE IT WAS HIS DRINK HOLDER SO HE WOULDN'T SPILL HIS POP WHEN PLAYING NINTENDO. HE SAID IT DIDN'T BOTHER HIM, BUT HE DIDN'T GO WITHOUT A SHIRT VERY OFTEN EXCEPT AT HOME.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?HE HAS A HEART MURMER AND WAS HAVING SOME PAIN AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH.
What do you think of this website?GREAT, I WISH I HAD FOUND IT SOONER, IT WOULD HAVE ALLEVIATED A LOT OF THE FEARS RE HIS SURGERY

CommentsHi, I'm a 21 year old lad and obviously have pectus excavatum. I have only just this second looked on the internet to see if this 'condition' is common! Turns out that it is! what really surprised me however is the reported psychological effects that this 'condition'has had on nearly all of the people on this site.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? It has a MAJOR effect on me psychologically! However, my personality on the outside has always told me that I can't let it control my life, and thus I have a lovely girlfriend, a great set of friends, and am now in my final year at university. Not bad achievements for someone who has another personality inside them, which is rarely shown to others, and thinks about the dip in his chest from the moment he wakes up, to the moment he goes to sleep at night. The thing is it doesn't matter how rational you are on the outside, or however many times your loved ones say "I don't even notice it", it still has a profound effect on my life. Now, after reading this site, I think i have finally found what has been responsible for my depression etc.. which I have experienced since my early teens. I have had counselling for other aspects of my life which I thought were the root of my problems. I seemed to work to a degree, but something is still there, and now i think i know what it is. Unfortunately, the cause travels around with me wherever i go!
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I have quite bad chest pains from time to time. Until no i had no idea they could be related to pectus excavatum, so in a way its nice to know they are not something more serious. In terms of my physical appearance i have improved my look significantly by heavy weight training. The chest is the same, but development of the pectoral muscles helps to hide the dip underneath clothes. I've always made an effort to walk tall with my shoulders back (which does much more to disguise the problem than to bend over and hide, which is what your body is physically trying to do by pulling your shoulders forward). Its a shame that surgery is the only real solution to the problems, however I would recommend heavy weight training to anyone who is that way inclined. Look at it this way, if its doesn't actually make your chest 'pop' out, it does improve your overall appearance. Also if anyone does make a remark, as we all know they do, you can give em a good slap! or merely remark on the imperfections that they have. Because, of course, nobody is perfect.
What do you think of this website?FANTASTIC

Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes, I think its ugly and I'm self concious of it.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? No, although I do sometimes get out of breath and have asthma which may be related? I am much more concerned with the psychological impact than the effect it has on my health.
What do you think of this website?Very informative. I have been able to diagnose myself from this website! Never knew pigeon chests were an actual medical condition, some excellent information

CommentsI am 16 years old and I was diagnosed with P.C. when I was 10. I have seen a specialist a few times now and I am still trying to decide whether or not to have it surgically corrected.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?YES! I find it hard to be physically close to people and I do not like to be touched. I have very low self confidence which affects my relationships with others and my involvement in activities.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?YES! My chest becomes painful when taking part in physical activities (like running) and I find it difficult to breathe. (I was told that this had nothing to do with my deformity).
What do you think of this website? It's been very useful. I finally know what it is that is wrong with me and that I'm not alone.
