Comments	I am 26 and suffer from Pectus Excavatum. It was noticed when I was a child but typically my parents were told not to worry and it would get better with time. It did not. I myself was not aware of it until late teens when I guess most people start to become conscious of their bodies. I took myself to see my GP who again told me it was just my shape and not to worry. Having recently began to research this myself so much more makes sense. I am very self conscious of my chest and try and cover it as much as possible. But never realised that my diminished breath capacity, poor stamina and racing pulse during exercise were all linked to this. I am now really too old for the corrective surgery so can only offer advice. Any parents discovering this in their child should shout, scream do whatever it takes to get someone to take notice and fix it. It doesn't go away, its always be with you and will hinder your childs confidence for many years.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	Very much, its easy to say just get over it but be it in the gym, at the beach or pool it never goes away. The staring eyes can reduce a very strong willed, sucessful and confident indiviual such as myself to shy retiring person.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	Diminshed breath capacity (Confimed medically), my pulse rises to 190 within 2 minutes of strenuous exercise, I have a poor recovery rate and low stamina.

Comments	My eldest son (now 18yrs of age) had the Nuss procedure in 2002. He has a great result. My second son (16yrs) has just been booked in for surgery as he has the opposite problem (pectus carinatum). I am waiting to see how my 13 year old daughter goes. I too have pectus excavatum but my parents never picked it up. It was only recently diagnosed through a routine chest x ray.

Comments	I have had visible P.E. since I was about 8 years of age, at the start I had no idea what it was and my family did not seem to bother due to the fact I was not I’ll. Once I had started my teens I then began to get more self aware plus the teasing had started and my chest started to deepen. This brought an end to my swimming/sports and to the enjoyment of summer, I also got so badly teased at school that I decided to hide myself away from my parents and say nothing. I have just turned 30 years of age and not one single hour goes by without me thinking about it and it rules my life totally. In the winter I’m ok as I can put loads of clothes on but in the summer I still ware 5 t-shirts and a lose shirt to cover myself up. I never knew this was so common until the other day, and now I think I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and I’m not alone in the world. If anyone has any advice at all on what I should do then please get in contact with me.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	It has ruled my life for as long as I can remember. And now at the age of 30 it feels different, I can feel the pressure and the left side of my chest hurts from time to time. I also have a hunch in my back which makes my shoulder blade hurt like hell when I bend over for to long and, also the ribs/lats on my left side are slightly depressed and under developed. As far as effecting my life is concerned, well it took me a week to tell my partner and if anyone goes to touch me I jump a mile and in the summer I could melt steel under my shirts:-)
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	It never really dawned on me until a couple of years ago why I could not get as fit as everyone else. I did loads of biking and lifting but I always got/get out of breath very quick and if I do running I start to get a tickling feeling and it makes me cough like mad. I also get irregular heartbeats from time to time, which does scare the hell out of me. I have always said that if I was not so scared of what other people think I would have gone to the doctor’s ages ago.
What do you think of this website?	It’s a massive comfort to know that you’re not alone and there is a cure. If anyone can help point me in the right direction then please, please get intouch.

Comments	thank god i found some info! but i need to speak to someone in person as this chest problem as coused so much suffering over the past 15+ years that i have felt like killing my-self on many occasions.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	yes it's all i ever think about, and has been for the past 15 years or so. i have now got to the stage that i'm to nervous to even go to my G P. i know to some it may sound crazy but to me it's everything.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	in a way it does, if i run to far i tend to start coughing and i get out of breath a little quick and i get a few pains in my back/right shoulder.
What do you think of this website?	totally amazing...! but i would love to be able to get a full health check from someone who knows what they are talking about. if you can help "please help"

Comments	Hello pectus people I am a 51year old female and showed no signs of pectus carinatum until 4 years ago!!!! I noticed by back was starting to look rather curved at the top and swaying in slightly at the hip making my clothes hang strangely. Also my chest bone was protruding more than usual making it difficult to get clothes to fit properly. Most people had not noticed anything different about me. A consultant diagnosed pectis carinatum along with thorasic scoliosis of the spine and kyphosis (curved back). I have also just been diagnosed with the onset of osteoporosis and have to take Fosmax biophosphate tablets He told me I was probably born with scoliosis and the pectus carinatum has been caused by the scoliosis i.e. balancing the back??? but if so - why has it only started to show recently???? He told me not to worry it was too minor for surgery and would not get any worse Ha Ha
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	Yes it is just starting to as I feel it has become noticeable to other people. I am not as confident and I worry about what the future will bring.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	Well it has got a little more prominent over the last 4 years and I no longer want to wear a swimming costume or anything low cut or clingy. Luckily I have no pain and it does not stop me from doing anything at this stage. I no longer go mountain biking as I would worry about taking a hard fall.
What do you think of this website?	excellent I had previously failed to find any information. I would say my pectus carinatum looks about the same as your photo illustration.
