| Comments | I am a 34 yr old female who had always been bothered by my 'funny'chest.Over the years no doctor had even offered a diagnosis.Excepting the sensitive dr I saw when aged about 12 who asked if i'd had a car accident!!Finally I was spurred into taking action as i can see my young son has the same problem.I found your website and contacted my GP asking for a referral for myself and my son.To cut a very long story short I had a PE repair in Feb this year .Yes it was painful post op but no pain,no gain!I wish i'd known it could have been corrected years ago!Ihave a scar but I look fairly 'normal' for the first time in my life!My son is on hold for now,but as soon as he becomes aware/bothered by his PE,he will be able to see through my op that it can be corrected! |

| Comments | I recently travelled to Berlin from the UK to have pectus repair by Prof. Schaarschmidt, I had a PE/PC combo and achieved very good results.
They have done 493 Nuss repairs and 64 of a new minimal access technique for Pectus Carinatum.
The Berlin team are one of the most experienced with Pectus surgery in the world and people have travelled from all over europe and Australia.
The NHS did not really help me and Britain seems to be lacking in Pectus awareness.
I'm happy to talk to anyone about my experience and you can contact professor Schaarschmidt at:

| Comments | im 16 and have PC and i never really knew it was anything "abnormal" until someone made fun of it in the changing rooms at school. ever since i have been very consciouse of it and haven't taken my top off in public since. i used to enjoy swimming and have since stopped going. i am always aware of it and it affects quite a lot of my decisions (including what to wear!) i am now considering surgery because im going on holiday next year with a friend and i dont want to sunbathe on a beach with my chest like it is. i dont think it helps that im soo skinny either, i think thats quite common though with people who have Pectus disorders. im considering surgery but im not sure whether im brave enough for the pain and all of the hassle and then theres a risk that it wont work!! |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? | hell yes! its affected my whole life! i always think to myself that it could only happen to me and no-one else! why me!?! its absoltely horrible! |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? | well i stopped doing sport at school due to having to get changed in front of people so i did lose interest in exercise. |
| What do you think of this website? | its been good help and a good source of information. first thing in the morning im making an appointment with my GP to try and get it sorted ASAP. |

| Comments | As a 17 year old kid who lives on the beach, I have a hard time just dealing with my chest. Granted, mine doesn't quite look like the ones pictures, or any that I have ever seen for that matter. It's more of a bone formation in the middle of my chest that goes down to where my ribs meet at their lowest point in the middle of my body. I can't quite describe it, but I can send pictures if this doesn't make sense.
I've been to a general practioner who told me to get X-rays and to see an Orthopedic Surgeon, both had no clue what it was an gave me a big run around. I guess the next step would be to see a thoracic surgeon.
I just want someone intelligent to have a conversation about it with. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? | Yes, very much so. It's just awkward to go swimming, or take my shirt off to play sports. As a skinny kid to begin with, it just makes things harder for me, and I often miss out on fun with my friends because of it. |
| Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? | No so much, no. |
| What do you think of this website? | It's a great website, extremely valuable. |

| Comments | I am the mum of a lovely 7 year old son who has a caved in central portion of his chest. I do not see it as a deformity and just the way he is! To lable it a disablily is terrible and brings tears to the eyes just to think that others may see it as such. He is tall and thin and his chest is just that way too - no lable attached!!!! The thought of major surgery appalls me and I would never consider it for him, as he is perfect just the way he is. He is a happy, healthy, active child, who is aware but not at all bothered that his chest dips in the middle, even though he knows that other boys in his class aren't quite the same shape. Long may this continue. How sad that other people could not see him the same way. |
