CommentsI'am a 25 year old adult and was born with pectus excavatum.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? Not as much as it did when I was younger. I was picked on periodically in school because of it. If people have problem with it then thats their problem.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? Not that I have noticed. I wouldn't really know since I don't know anything differnt.
What do you think of this website? This site can be helpful for parents who's child is born with a pectus deformity.

CommentsI started developing the pectus deformaty in 2004. My mom knew somthing was wrong and talked to Dr. Charles Baldwin. He told my parents and I that i would need the surgery. I had pectus carinatum he told me about the operation and i new that i wanted it fixed. I had the surgery in June of 2005 wethin about three weeks i was back to normal although I could not play any contact sports for nine months. If i had the choice to not have the surgery I would still do it, it mad my chest look a lot better. I'am glad i had the surgery.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? Not any more!!
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? For nine months after the surgery i could not play sports but that is the only affect now. Befor the surgey it did not ether.
What do you think of this website? It was alright but i learned more from my doctor.

CommentsMy son is 14 years old and has pectus excavatum. We have never considered surgery as an alternative, but it may be medically necessary.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically? My son is very embarrassed about entering highschool because of his condition. It is more pronounced than it used to be.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically? He is currently undergoing tests to see if surgery is medically necessary. He just had a cat scan and is awaiting a consultation with a heart specialist
What do you think of this website?Extremely informative!

CommentsI'm 16 and I have pectus excavatum. Doctors that I've seen so far have discouraged surgery because the deformity is only moderate.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes, I feel extremely self-conscious whenever I have to take off my shirt in public. I really dislike going to beaches because I know I'll have to take off my shirt.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?I saw a heart specialist who detected a murmur in my heart. I have little endurance in running and sports.
What do you think of this website?I thought it was very helpful and informative. I've been very curious about types of surgeries for my excavatum, and now that I have some more info, I'm going to bring up that possibility with my parents.

CommentsI was dismissed by my doctor about this condition at a young age and told there was no point in any surgery as it was regarded as being purely cosmetic.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Yes it has done since age 11 when another boy pointed at my chest and loadly said "eugh" in front of classmates at the swimming baths. I never go swimming anymore and never take my shirt off if anyone about. i've been self conscious about this ever since. I am now 38 and trying to overcome my anxieties by gradual exposure around friends but still tend to cross my arms across my chest or dart for a t shirt to conceal it! Never had a comment or complaint from any girlfriends.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?sometimes short of breath, some minor chest pain occasionally.
What do you think of this website?very informative and helpful. Its also good to know i'm not alone. would be nice if there were more information about surgery on older patients such as myself ie availability on NHS, or cost of surgery privately.

CommentsI'm 14, I'm healthy, except of course my case of pectus carinatum, and I love sports. Pectus deformity actualy made me quit basketball because during practice, we'd play skins vs. shirts and that wasn't working for me. I really want surgery because living in this society with pectus carinatum really sucks- It makes me really depressed sometimes and I think, "why me!?" It seems worse than if I were dying, atleast people would show me some sympathy then! But not with this- i'm shunned and mocked
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?Of course. Every day I have to find a shirt that makes the deformity less visible and every day I slouch, back away from people in fear that they'll hit me in the chest and then say, "What the heck is that weird bump on your chest!?" It really hurts and my deformity first became visible in 5th grade. It was in 5th grade that my classmates found out and mocked me, calling me names such as "uniboob" and, "you have a 3rd nipple!". It's really left a deep scar on me and my parents don't help, they just tell me that everyone has a cross to bear. I really want surgery, I don't want to have to go through with this through highschool as I'm 14 and about to become a Freshman. I really want to be able to swim again with confidence and without having the main topic of the day on my "weird bumb". It's affected me soo much and in so many ways-now I even have a slight back problem from slouching. I just wish I had parents who would listen to what I want, and what i've gone through. They don't know squat about what i've gone through. I just want to be normal, and have a normal life. It's even gotten so bad that some days at school, i'd go to the bathroom just to get alone and away from the eyes of my peers for a while.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?Yes, atleast I think so. It seems like I have a lack of energy, and i've had my heart hurt sometimes. I'm not fat, and I have pectus carinatum. So i'm guessing that that's the reason. And it doesn't help much when I play football and i'm the best runningback on the team-coaches pressure me to run when my heart is hurting. Also, I of course don't know how to swim very well and it's not like i can get up and learn too easily with this. Even going running can be hard because the wind will push the shirt against me tightly and it shows my deformity.
What do you think of this website?I'm really glad I found it. My parents never really sent me to a specialist so I had no idea what my deformity was even called until just recently. I'm planning on maybe even showing my parents this site- to make them see all of the negative things my deformity can do to people.
