Comments	My daughter tel me last night and asked me to check my 12 yr old grandson (?swelling on his chest) I have just examined him and recognised his condition as Pectus Carinatum. My brother had the same condition diagnosed when he joined the Navy. He does not have any underlying medical problems with his condition. On questioning my daughter again, after finding this very helpful web site, she recalled my grandson saying he was breathless and had pain in his chest. That he had been diagnosed as having asthma when he was little but never developed or presented with any of the usual asthmatic signs/symptoms. No medication had been prescribed for him at the time. I am an ex Paramedic and discussed this condition some time ago with a colleague who had been living with Pectus excavatum for many years and only visited his GP because he was becoming breathless and had palpitations. The GP referred him to a specilist who operated on him immediately because the deformity of the sternum was restricting the hearts right ventricle, which was affecting his breathing. I have witnessed many patients/and/or relatives be reluctant to question some of the medical practitioners advice/response, which resulted in subsequent delays/non treatment of patients conditions. Please please ask questions when visiting your GP/Consultants and if possible write down all the things you may of been worried about before your actual appointment. Take this along with you and do not be overcome by the medical practitioners position. They have a duty of care to ensure they have investigated and risk assessed your condition and if you feel the consultation as been inadequate, then ask to see a specialist thoracic consultant with experience in the specific condition you may have. (Please note, this is not an attempt to undermine many of the medical practitioners out there that do a fantastic job) It's about communication from everyone and feeling confident in expressing/detailing the signs/symptoms you have and to remember Doctors do not have a crystal ball and need vital, relevant details of your symptoms when examining patients and need to be informed how it may be affecting you. This will reduce any risk for both you or your relative and results in a more positive outcome for both patient/Doctor's. My daughter contacted her GP today to make an appointment, which ultimately will result in a suitable and sufficient assessment of our grandson.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	Yes, he is very reluctant to even take his shirt of in front of his mother. We now no why. We will ensure everything is done to reassure and reduce his anxiety.

Comments	Its been almost 5 months since i had my pectours excavatum treated, after years of worry & anxiety i decided to sort it out, and it has changed my life totally for the better. After being fobbed off by my gp since i was 13 as "just having to put up with it" and its " just superficial" at the age of 28 i decided enough is enough. I went privatly and had a spcially made implant inserted into the "hole" in my chest, by a fantastic surgeon who was brilliant threw out, it looks fantastc the before & after photos are amazing! It was expensive but to me it was worth every penny, i can now do things i never could before like go swimming, sun bath topless without feeling self concious. I would totally reccommend anybody having it done! If anybody wants any info on the name & contact number of the surgery/ consultant i saw please mail me & i will forward you the contact detail or if you want any other advice or info please mail me.
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	I would never go swimming or sunbath. I would not feel comfortable in any sitiuation where i was topless!!!!

Comments	my son whos 13 has pe a cardiothorcic surgeon (mr a.y.youhana) wants to do an operation in spring 2006 the ravitch,hes done a few of these operations before but not for a few years.would be gratefull if anyone has had the same operation could contact me to let us know what were in for please..

Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	yes,it stops me from swimming with friends,and sometimes in plays contact is involved,and im always worried that they will find out.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	no,not at all.I can run faster and hold my breath longer than most of my peers.

Comments	I'm close to 17 now, and living on the beach, and just being a teen in general, I find it extremely difficult to deal with my chest. My chest doesn't really look like any others I have seen online, so I'm assuming I have a mild case, however, it still bothers me greatly. Being that I'm so young, and not really having my parents to see eye-to-eye with on the issue, I don't really know what I can do to fix it etc. I'm obviously really self-conscience about it, but just looking for advice. I guess if you want to see it, I can e-mail you pictures. Maybe someone else has the same chest as me?
Does your pectus deformity affect you psychologically?	Very much so. I won't go to pool parties, can't have fun at the beach, and can't take my shirt off when its 95* outside.
Does your pectus deformity affect you physically?	Honestly, I've never really noticed any physical affects. I mean, it gets in the way, and is uncomfortable when you're close to others, but other than that, I haven't seen any negative physical affects.
